Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small trees 2–7 m tall.

Stems: New growth densely whitish to pale brown appressed pilose and with a waxy scurf, becoming glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic, oblong–elliptic, or elliptic–obovate, 4–20(–30) cm long, 2–9(–10) cm wide. Apex rounded to obtuse, ± mucronulate or emarginate. Base rounded, cuneate, or weakly subcordate. Surfaces glabrous except midrib sparsely ephemerally puberulent, glossy and medium green on upper surface; lower surfaces paler, thin, coriaceous. Margins entire. Primary lateral veins evident but not raised, at first slightly purplish, later greenish, usually 12–15 pairs, connected by an evident arched vein 1–8 mm from margin, venation pinnate, lateral veins connected by an arched submarginal vein, higher order venation forming a reticulate pattern. Petioles 10–50 mm long, distinctly swollen at or near midrib junction, minutely puberulent and scurfy, soon glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 5–15(–21) in puberulent, axillary cymes, peduncles 3–15 mm long, elongating up to 20 mm long in fruit, pedicels 2–5 mm long; bracts small, opposite. Calyx of 4 sepals, imbricate. staminate flowers with sepals deltate–ovate, ca. 3.5 mm long, puberulent, pistillate flowers with sepals deltate–ovate, ca. 3 mm long, puberulent. Corolla of 4 petals, valvate, staminate flowers petals deltate, 4–5 mm long, glabrous, pistillate flowers petals yellowish green, narrowly deltate–ovate, 3.5–4.5 mm long, glabrous. Stamens 8, in 2 whorls, distinct, reduced but always present in functionally pistillate flowers, staminate flowers nectary disk glabrate, pistillate flowers nectary disk glabrate. Ovary superior, 4-celled and 4-lobed, carpels connate, only slightly distinct at apex to almost entirely distinct; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous, 1 ascending; style 1, terminating in 4 short stigmatic branches. staminate flowers ovary minutely whitish puberulent; pistillate flowers ovary whitish puberulent; style minutely puberulent.

Fruit: Capsules dark green; 6–7 mm long; 11–20 mm wide; carpels almost completely connate or connate (⅓–)½; their length; becoming somewhat reflexed at dehiscence; 6–9 mm long; exocarp puberulent; ± becoming glabrate; endocarp very sparsely puberulent along suture or sometimes glabrous. the carpels dehiscing along the upper suture; exocarp. Seeds 1–2 per carpel; 5–8 mm long; glossy black when ripe; crustaceous; ovoid; sometimes angled from compression; embryo straight in fleshy endosperm; radicle short; cotyledons compressed; ovate; putamen brown; warty.
